Eureka Day Reviews

"...The script reflects the playwright’s keen ear for modern dialogue and progressive jargon. The characters talk about “holding space,” “feeling seen,” “being othered.” In their efforts to build consensus, they frequently use the hedge phrase “no yeah” as a way to simultaneously disagree with and affirm another person’s opinion. Of course, those niceties disappear when tempers flare."

"...I am not sure how many of you have ever been associated with a private school, but be aware that they are very different from the public schools most of us have been involved with. When I lived in Evanston, there was a private school that our next-door neighbor attended. I know that they were far more privileged than we were and their rules were much easier to live with. "Eureka Day" is a private day school that is located in Berkeley, California. The time is 2018 and it deals with things like health department rules (vaccinations), communication, respect, and fellowship."

"...Jonathan Spector’s hilarious and thought-provoking EUREKA DAY feels as timely as if it had been written yesterday. With the current controversy raging in America over the shocking new medical advice and regulations placed upon immunization, Spector’s comedy hits home hard. Definitely one of Citadel Theatre’s finest productions, EUREKA DAY has been staged and guided by talented Scott Westerman. The play features a gifted cast, all of whom work well together, like the gears of a finely oiled machine. Each actor has their own moment to shine, but it’s in the group chats where the humor, humanity and harmonious insights come across most clearly. This is a play that will speak strongly to every educator in the audience. And, unlike the United States today, everyone is heard and respected."

"...Watching Eureka Day at Citadel this past weekend, the Tony Award winner for Best Revival in 2025, reminded me of my time as a school board member first at a suburban elementary district than at a high school district."

"...The Citadel Theatre opens its 2026-27 Theatre Season by doing what they do best: taking a play with a little controversy and a lot of questions and bringing it to the North Shore audience. Eureka Day is a play about community, morals, consensus and beliefs and the conflict that arises when they all collide in conversations about the thing that matters most to everyone, our children. Director Scott Westerman uses creative staging to bring all of these issues to light in the intimate space of the Citadel."
