Eleemosynary

The Greenhouse Theater Center
2257 N Lincoln Avenue Chicago

Eleemosynary uncovers the deep, often unrealized aspirations of women and how their ambitions affect their relationships with their daughters. The word, Eleemosynary means “Charitable; the giving of alms.” The play probes the desires and disappointments of three generations of exceptional women – Dorothea, the grandmother who came of age in the 1940’s, Artie, her daughter who strikes out on her own, and granddaughter, Echo, who tries to forge a connection between the two. As they struggle for individuality and purpose, they find communication between them almost impossible – so they talk to the audience instead.
