Do Something Pretty Reviews
Chicago Tribune - Somewhat Recommended
"...For those of us who came of age pre-Internet, or at least pre-smartphones, it’s easy to romanticize growing up without the pressures of social media and addictive algorithms. “Do Something Pretty” reminds us that adolescence has always been tough, in ways that are both similar to and different from the issues facing kids today. Parents may not need the nightly news to remind them to locate their children anymore — there are apps for that now — but there are many ways for kids to feel unmoored, whether in analog or digital worlds. Uneven character development aside, Ross’ play makes you feel for these damaged kids and hope that better days are ahead for them."

"...The world premiere of “Do Something Pretty” at Rivendell Theatre Ensemble feels like the Chicago storefront version of classic ’80s teen movies like “Sixteen Candles,” “Pretty in Pink” and “Say Anything,” and that’s very much a compliment. Playwright Melissa Ross’ story may be standard, but her dimensional characters capture authentic teenage awkwardness and angst, and the central performances, especially in this intimate venue, make you ache for them."

"...They are now doing a World Premiere in their tiny ( or should I say intimate) theater. The play is called “Do Something Pretty” and is written by Melissa Ross. The story takes place in 1992, so when one sees the VHS tapes ( video recording, back in the day), you will know that we were able to save TV shows and family parties/gatherings, even then."

"...This is a play that probably won’t change anyone’s life. But it’s a production with will haunt audiences for a long time. It evokes as many smiles as tears, and will be impossible to forget. There are everyday people and scenes filled with the familiar as well as those moments that stand out, making theatergoers laugh in delight or cringe in repulsion. An evening of memory and compelling character study combine in DO SOMETHING PRETTY to tell a finely detailed story that’s filled with all the richness that makes up those unsung moments of everyday life."

"...What’s compelling about Do Something Pretty is how it teeters on transitions, capturing the anxiety teenagers face as they head into high school or college or life. By harnessing the humor and heartbreak of the insignificant and more meaningful moments in these rites of passage, Rivendell’s new show manages to be both ordinary and profound."

"...Rivendell Theatre’s Do Something Pretty by Melissa Ross is a production that certainly showcases a deeply committed and talented ensemble, even though the play itself feels uncertain about its intended audience and message. All kudos go to the cast consisting of RTE member Katherine Mallen Kupferer (Phoebe), Jasper Johnson (Matt), Reilly Oh (Jason) fresh off a super performance in Lookingglass’ White Rooster, and Jocelyn Zamudio (Evie). I will add that at times, the personas of Matt and Jason felt like they have been more effectively played if the two actors switched roles, but that may mess too much with the personas desired by playwright and director."

"...A reflection of a very specific time period and the attitude about sex and relationships during that time, Do Something Pretty shows a brief point in time for one pair of sisters and two guys in their life. The show is a character driven show that leans into realism to create this view peering into one day in their lives."
