Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Reviews

"...The con men still cavort genially enough but the production values are now limited -- the sad palm trees of the French Riviera look like refugees from Lilliput. At intermission, I wandered down to the pit and stared at a couple of synthesizers where the strings used to be. And the ensemble has lost at least one pair of performers -- which makes the huge stage of the Auditorium Theatre all that much tougher to fill with fun."

"...The frothy, lighthearted musical comedy about two charming con artists is full of the kind of silly gags, in-your-face puns and ribald jokes that recall a TV sitcom. It's all in poor taste and slapstick shtick, yet, in spite of our better judgment, we can't help laughing at it."

"...The core of the show is the relationship between the two crooks, who admire each other even as each tries to put the other out of business. The jokes are vulgar and the songs forgettable, but this touring edition of the 2005 Broadway production triumphs thanks to the expertly played comic camaraderie between Tom Hewitt’s elegant, arrogant Lawrence and D.B. Bonds’s clownish Freddy."

"...The current Broadway in Chicago production of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", the musical version of the movie with music and lyrics by David Yazbeck is here until August 12th and the best word to describe this production is WOW!!!!!. This is two and a half hours of pure laughter with a cast that is dynamite in every way."

"...In musicalizing the 1988 Steve Martin/Michael Caine comedy about two competing con men in a Mediterranean resort town, Lane and Yazbek navigate both straits with ease. Scoundrels makes a surprisingly good musical—due in no small part to Lane’s laugh-out-loud book (one of the funniest in recent memory) and Yazbek’s catchy, jazzy tunes and überwitty lyrics."

"...This is a thoroughly entertaining show that offers a funny storyline with zany characters with current one-liners thrown in for laughs. The show is light-hearted, breaks the fourth wall effectively as the players wink at the audience lovingly. Scroundrels is filled with suspense, elegance, whimsy, and high and low comedy with fine musical numbers. You can’t ask for much more! You’ll have a good time with these Scoundrels."
