Conscience
220 Dupage St Elgin
In 1950, Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman elected to the Senate, also became the first senator to stand on the Senate floor and publicly rebuke Senator Joseph McCarthy, who rose to power using post-World War II an=-Communist hysteria and ruined the lives of those who opposed him. Senator Smith's "Declara=on of Conscience" speech was a public act of defiance at a =me when both Democrats and Republicans were cowed into silence for fear of retribu=on. But it came at a cost. Fast paced and emo=onally charged, Conscience is the story of a remarkable woman who stood up for what was right and refused to back down and has been called "a =mely boxing match of a history play..." by The New York Times.
