Chicago Tribune - Highly Recommended

"...Frankly, that reception was enough for me to revise my thinking on this show. I enjoyed “Come From Away" on Broadway, although I thought it lacked some structural and thematic complexity as compared with its peers. I still do. But sitting with my fellow Chicagoans Wednesday night, I came to a deeper understanding of just how beautifully this show gives people reason to come to the theater: it offers comfort, understanding and hope for our shared future on this planet. It touches the heart. Hence the new four stars."

Chicago Sun Times - Highly Recommended

"...With rare exceptions, every song is credited to the company overall, since they tend to experience the events as a group. For example, “Darkness and Trees” provides the reaction of a group of the displaced as they are bused to places of shelter very late at night, not really knowing where they are. “On the Edge” depicts the locals’ concern over their guests’ mounting frustration, leading to the most fun sequence of the evening, about being a Newfoundlander and kissing fish."

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...Come From Away turns the cliche of the triumph of the human spirit into something we can all aspire to-no small thing, and something that's not regularly achievable in a post-9/11 world. But the human capacity to foster healing and kindness amid unspeakable cruelty shines like an indomitable sun over this show (directed by Christopher Ashley). Nobody in Newfoundland solved terrorism. But they showed the world how to respond to it with compassion and humanity."

Windy City Times - Highly Recommended

"...Come From Away runs 95 fast and engaging minutes. It's energetic, but pleasantly without the phony pumped pizazz of many Broadway shows. Perhaps that's because it's based on real people and real micro stories of both Newfoundlanders and passengers, which are honestly-if oh-so-rapidly-presented in checkerboard fashion."

Time Out Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...Come From Away moves briskly without feeling rushed; it evokes genuine emotion without tipping into the maudlin. Tying everything together are Sankoff and Hein's Celtic-flavored songs, which travel from witty to rousing to touching. While it doesn't shy from the uglier aspects of 9/11 and its aftermath, the musical captures a moment of deep human kindness. And unlike many feel-good shows that pick audiences up but can't keep them aloft, Come From Away's perfect balance of comedy and clarity leaves you soaring for days to come. "

"...Superbly shaped by director Christopher Ashley, the national tour, now playing Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre, features eighteen sterling performers from inside out. With care to spare, they dig into the clever lyrics and irresistible melodies of 15 storytelling songs. Watching this priceless ensemble instantly switch roles from coping locals to befuddled outsiders until both sides bond — it’s a joy to take home and cherish."

"...Irene Sankoff and David Hein brilliantly brought together a dreadful period of history and taught audiences around the world that mankind will always be its superhero when villains attack. Sankoff and Hein also bring to life the prejudice that can be compounded by fear when one of the actors who played a Muslim traveler that faces discrimination and has to succumb to a strip search before boarding the plane and the horrifying aftermath when seeing the attack. Lastly, we feel the pain of this tragic event when Hannah, whose son lost his life as one of the firefighters in New York."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...The “Must See Musical” that we have been anticipating is here! The musical is “Come From Away”, a sort of “chamber piece” telling us the true story of a small town that hosted over 7,000 passengers of planes during the 9-11 trauma that we suffered. With a book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, this is an amazing 100 minutes of great story telling that will bring a tear to your eyes ( several times) but a smile on your face ( far more often) and all in all will create a lasting memory for every audience member."

NewCity Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...I choked up several times, a sentiment shared by those around me who exploded in a standing ovation at the end. But I also cried silently at the present-day outcome of what once seemed like such a blossoming of international brotherhood in the face of despicable acts, as I thought about the abandonment of these basic human values-what we like to think are intrinsic American values-now being promoted by the leader of the United States itself."

"...The big surprise in all this is how the seemingly most unlikely material for a musical ends up feeling as if it were custom-made for the form and turns great darkness into a healing light."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...This musical is wonderful. It’s the perfect anecdote to the negativity audiences may have been bombarded with during the past two years. The show is a rousing, joyful celebration of kindness, coming together and the generosity that lies within each of us. While offering a motivational, true story, “Come From Away” provides an entertaining salve to soothe the soreness of today’s political abrasiveness. Do yourself a favor: treat yourself to this polished, professionally-produced National Tour. It’s a show that’s guaranteed to make you look at the world in a whole, different way."

"...But the show's talented cast of experienced Broadway and TV actors really are able to convey how Gander's warmhearted hospitality eventually permeates the awful stress of people who at first are not allowed off a plane even though they've landed, can't communicate easily with family back home and are leery of how their views, fears and needs may be regarded by strangers."

Chicago On Stage - Highly Recommended

"...Come From Away is playing at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in a limited three-week engagement, and it is one of those shows that is practically guaranteed to inspire those who see it. Sit up close if you can—this is a very personal feeling show and the theatre is large—but on opening night the entire house was on their feet for the standing ovation at the end, and this production truly deserved it. If you’ve never heard this amazing tale of what happened on the outskirts of 9/11, you owe it to yourself to come and experience this heartfelt, hilarious, and exhilarating true story. It will stay with you for a long time."

Picture This Post - Highly Recommended

"...Just about everyone who lived through 9/11 tends to mark the date as a watershed. Those who came after it have absorbed its effects. Under layers of security measures, a fear of terrorism has replaced openness; caution has replaced tolerance. COME FROM AWAY serves as a corrective. Without goodness and trust on both sides, these stories from Newfoundland simply wouldn’t exist."
