"...Modishly crossing Nick Hornby's romantic haplessness with a Neil LaBute-like cynicism, this 1997 Patrick Marber play about what passes for love can get tedious under the best of circumstances. But it needn't be the wreck Brian Sage's MOB production makes of it. Pretty much everything's off. Alice isn't the nymphet she should be, Dan isn't the predator, Larry isn't the prole beast, and--catatonically underplayed for most of the show--Anna just isn't. What's more, Sage's decision to drop the English accents is as damaging as it is incomprehensible, obscuring important class themes while causing Marber's Briticisms to clank loudly."

"...Listening to Patrick Marber’s dialogue, one gets the distinct impression that lines have been left out. In his infidelity play, English playwright Marber tries for an almost Pinteresque terseness in which what’s unsaid hovers behind everything that’s said. But without Pinter’s control of language, Marber’s 1997 script (later a Mike Nichols film of the same title) instead sounds like the author has neglected the difficult hand-dirtying work of filling in his sketchily drawn characters with detail and backstory. He gives his four characters professions, but little else.."
