Cirque Shanghai Reviews

"...What you get this year is very similar to what you might see in, well, Shanghai. The painted, gilded drops of Chinese vistas familiar to anyone who has seen these shows in China have a few creases — a consequence, perhaps, of too many hours in a 747. But this year's troop is full of excellent performers with many levels of experience."

"...Cirque Shanghai has returned to Navy Pier for its second summer-long run with a new show, "Bai Xi" ("100 Stunning Acts"). Not only have its creators (including director Andrew Park, head of Chicago's Quest Theatre Ensemble) clearly learned from last year's mistakes by devising a 95-minute show now blissfully free of a cheesy narrator, they've also assembled a troupe of young, immensely likable performers."

"...The all-new thrill show delivers awesome acrobatics, eye-popping costumes and pop and traditional music. Dating back 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty, the feats are awesome (and many original to the U.S.), including plate spinning, bone-bending contortions, slack wire dancing, hoop diving, trapeze work, unicycle flipping, chair stacking, handstands on human pyramids and the ever popular dragon dance."

"...Cirque Shanghai performs its new show at the Pepsi Skyline Stage, and what a show! Far better than last year- this year, there is no silly script between acts- just acts and acts that will astound you, young or old- this is 90 minutes of pure spectacle with a strong man, tumblers, plate spinning, trapeze, a unicycle act that will blow your mind, a bike rider who manages to take on 8 passengers and still keep his balance, a balancing act with chairs stacked to a height of over forty feet and you won't believe your eyes when you see the contortion act ( these youngsters are like pretzels). There is also hoop diving and one act called the roman wheel which is amazing to watch."
