Cinderella

Lyric Opera
20 N. Wacker Drive Chicago

Lyric Opera of Chicago gives the beloved tale of Cinderella (La Cenerentola) a delightful operatic treatment in this bubbling Rossini hit. The story is a familiar one: Cinderella is forced to dress in rags and toil away for her nasty stepsisters and horrible stepfather -- who's scheming to convince the dashing prince to marry one of his "real" daughters. But mean girls aren't the prince's style, and there's a happily-ever-after ending for the fair maiden with the heart of gold in this dazzling production with just the right doses of humor and heart. Superstar mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard partners with bel canto master Lawrence Brownlee in his eagerly awaited Lyric debut as he sings "with freedom and fervor ... a reminder of the infectious excitement Rossini makes possible" (The New York Times) and acclaimed Lyric favorite Alessandro Corbelli as the pompous stepfather. Your chariot awaits to carry you away fairy tale-style at Chicago's Civic Opera House.

Chicago On the Aisle - Highly Recommended

"...With its blindingly bright colors and brilliant musical hijinks, the Lyric Opera of Chicago's current production of Rossini's "Cinderella" plays out like a surreal dream that might possess one in the wee hours of the night. It makes perfect sense while it's happening, zany and hypnotic at the same time. Rossini's music is wrapped in a fanciful 2007 production by Barcelona director Joan Font and designer Joan Guillen that goes well beyond the boring rules of logic."

Stage and Cinema - Highly Recommended

"...Lyric Opera's delightfully laugh-out-loud production is directed by Joan Font, founding director of Barcelona's Els Comediants. His playful interpretation provides prominent acting roles to six rats who form Cinderella's domestic court. Moving with the grace and nimbleness of dancers, these silent actors heighten the comedy and underline the fantasy, while proving incredibly useful as stage hands."

ChicagoCritic - Highly Recommended

"...But the production is so delightful, and Rossini's reworking of the story made it so much sweeter, that the time flew by. For a mature child of reasonable age, La Cenerentola is a wonderful introduction to opera, and for anyone else, as well."
