Calypso Reviews

"...What Muschler does well is presuppose that Odysseus freely started a relationship with Calypso; unlike in Homer’s telling, he wasn’t lured or trapped. While the play is occasionally repetitive, the winning performances and design (particularly Maggie McGlenn’s costumes and Joseph Nelson’s lights) are superb. Bailey McWilliams-Woods’s intimacy direction excellently conveys Calypso and Odysseus’s attraction, central to the warm atmosphere conveyed by Newmark’s production. You understand why Odysseus might have stayed with Calypso for as long as he did. By reframing the legendary nymph, Calypso spins a tale of love and heartbreak even mortals can embrace."

"...Another stop for Odysseus on his long journey home, we see his and Calypso’s story played out after he finds himself stuck on her island. Coming together over their love of music, we see the two’s relationship from start to finish in an intimate, small theater setting."
