We are looking for Video or Zoom submission featuring either a short contemporary monologue (under 2 minutes), or a reading of either monologue in the attached script sample (on page 5 and 8 respectively).

Phoenix Rising Productions is looking to cast a young actor between the ages of 12 to 25 to play Jackie, the lead character, in a Staged Reading of Gendered Cut directed by Iris Sowlat, which is taking place at The Playground Theater in Uptown, Chicago on October 24th and 25th.

Short Synopsis: Gendered Cut follows Jackie, a young Jewish person, who is coming to terms with their Trans* identity through conversations with their Father, and a Therapist. The action of the play begins as Jackie is preparing for their Bar Mitzvah. By the end of the first scene, they have decided they want to have a Bat Mitzvah. This coming-of-age story is set in the final years of the Biden Administration with a jump forward in the second act to the not so distant future.

Trigger Warnings: Jackie experiences other hardships outside of their transition process including: Transphobia (from both External and Internal Forces), Death of Family Members, Divorce of their Parents, and being Witness to a Grandparent?s Suicide Attempt.

Jackie is a young Trans* Non-Binary person who presents male in the beginning of the show and presents trans* femme by the closing of the play. Jackie is 12-13 years old in the first act, and 15-17 years old in the second act. We are striving to cast the Role of Jackie Authentically, and are seeking a Trans* person to fill this role. This person may present as: Femme, Masc, Genderqueer, or Non-Binary to play the roles or role. Jackie can be double cast between acts depending on the auditioning actors? comfort playing many gender expressions.
