Description:

Don't Feed the Pigeons! by Nena Martins
About the show: Welcome to rehearsals for CA-CAW! What begins as a typical rehearsal process takes increasingly unsettling turns as the company prepares its play-within-a-play. New actor to the company, Brooklyn, has always wanted to be a star- so when she gets cast in this critically acclaimed play, stakes are high. However, as the rehearsal process progresses, she becomes increasingly aware that something isn't quite right in this rehearsal room. The Director is borderline abusive, the script keeps on changing, the rules of the rehearsal room are strict. She starts realizing that theatre is a lot more about obedience, than it is about freedom. As Brooklyn becomes progressively more intertwined with her role, and reality and fiction collide, she must find a way to flip the narrative. This meta-theatrical dramedy explores the parallels between the Hero's Journey and the American Dream, and questions the way in which we tend to replicate hierarchies.

About Gwydion Theatre Company: At Gwydion Theatre Company, our mission is to serve as a platform for our ensemble's generation. Through the work of striking dramatists both new and old, we confront uncomfortable truths, question internalized bias, and push the boundaries of the form. Building off of Chicago's rich theatrical traditions of ensemble work and Grotowski's theory of "Poor Theater", we re-center the theatre in our generation's socio-political discourse.

Character descriptions: (Note on Casting: This play is about performing roles. With that said, there is no specific gender, race, or age for any of the actors. Please refer to this Disclosure Sheet with information about each character's portrayal of simulated intimacy and violence.)

Brooklyn/ Emilia: The inciting incident, and the hate-child of hope and ambition. Well-intentioned, na?ve, easily swayed. Plays the Pigeon in Part 3. Note: Brooklyn is a placeholder name. Use the name of the actor playing the part instead.

Hermia: The rising action, and the hate-child of grief and jealousy. Doubles as Juliet. Speaks the truth even when no one wants to hear it. Plays Annie in Part 3.

Claudius: Wishes he was the climax, can never quite get there, and the hate-child of "I am owed this" and "I am owed that". Dramatic, arrogant, pathetic. Plays Mitch in Part 3.

Gertrude: Denouement, and the love-child of tiredness and a willingness to keep dreaming despite it. Persistent, capable, odd. Plays Mother in Part 3.

Director: The opening credits, the first and last image, and the hate-child of fake sugar and real venom. Will charm your pants off and then make fun of you 'cause you have no pants.

Stage Manager/Ushers: They do as they're told. Collateral damage.
