Edge of the Wood Theatre
The Glass Menagerie

Pay: Stipend

Description:

Edge of the Wood Theatre, located in Chicago's Edgebrook neighborhood on the northwest side, announces auditions for its Studio Series production of The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams on Wednesday, April 29 from 7-9pm and Saturday, May 2 from 2-4pm. Callbacks on May 6. Auditions will be held in the theatre space at the Edgebrook Community Church, 6736 N Loleta Avenue, Chicago.

THE GLASS MENAGERIE explores the line between reality and illusion, the difference between the lives we lead and the lives we desire. The members of the Wingfield family each live in a place of incongruity. A former Southern belle living in poverty in a tenement in St. Louis, a sensitive poet working in a shoe warehouse, and a fragile, ethereal young woman forced to live in a modern world of steel and sharp edges.

We are looking for an ensemble that can navigate the rich subtext and lyrical beauty of Williams' language while exploring the harsh realities and unspoken desires that make this play a timeless classic. The role of Amanda is cast.

ROLES AVAILABLE:
Tom Wingfield: Male (25-40)
Tom has always felt different. He's lost, isolated and vulnerable; only able to escape his pain when he's writing, drinking, going to the movies or seeking companionship. Raised by a single mother, Tom lives with the fear he may be exactly like his absent father, unable to conform to the societal expectations of becoming a husband, father and breadwinner.

Laura Wingfield: Female (25-35)
Extremely shy and emotionally fragile, Laura has a slight physical disability and crippling social anxiety. She has a rich inner life revolving around her record collection and her prized glass menagerie of tiny, delicate animal figures. Laura, like Tom, has always felt different. Unlike Tom, she doesn't look down on an ordinary life but feels she could never deserve such a life.

Jim O'Connor: Male (25-35)
Jim is a genuine and enthusiastic young man who went to school with Laura and Tom. He was a high school golden boy but hasn't yet followed up that success in the real world. Jim is driven to self improvement and believes himself to be an insightful judge of character. He possesses a pathological optimism that can be contagious.
