Synopsis: A prodigal daughter returns home, only she can't get any farther than the front lawn.
When three seemingly inconsequential strangers arrive for house calls, she's pulled and pushed
towards the front door and a life-changing confession. Under the auspices of California
sunshine and a suburban wasp's nest, an average "good day" is revealed to be made-up of so
much more in this meditation on grief and reconciliation.
Pay: $750 stipend, to be paid at the conclusion of the run.
This production will utilize internal understudies and two external Swings.
Character tracks detailed below.
All Understudies will have guaranteed performances
Character Descriptions:
Anna, late twenties, a daughter coming home. Bright, volatile, and terrifyingly honest. Anna has
returned to her childhood home and planted herself on the lawn in a self-declared hunger strike
she can barely explain. She ricochets between humor, philosophy, cruelty, and vulnerability at
lightning speed. Anna wants connection desperately but pushes people away the moment they
get close. An emotional wildfire barely contained by intellect and sarcasm.
(THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. SEEKING EXTERNAL US)
Isaac, late twenties or early thirties, an exterminator. On what may be the most important
workday of his life. Isaac is polite, practical, and painfully earnest; trying very hard to be a
functional adult. Beneath his calm professionalism is a deep anxiety about his future and his
health. Grounded, sincere, quietly funny. (ALSO SEEKING UNDERSTUDY. SEEKING
EXTERNAL US)
Toby, thirteen. Sharp, observant, and unsettlingly composed for her age. Toby is a Girl Scout
selling seeds door-to-door, but she's far less innocent than the uniform suggests. Curious about
death, nature, and human behavior, she watches the adults around her like a scientist observing
strange animals. Dry, intelligent, emotionally self-possessed. (ALSO SEEKING UNDERSTUDY.)
Chris, twenties-thirties. A lifelong local who never quite left home. Chris is warm, awkward, and
painfully sincere, still carrying a teenage crush on Anna that he never outgrew. He has built a
small, stable life in the town Anna escaped, and he wants badly to be the dependable person
everyone needs him to be. Kind-hearted, earnest, slightly bumbling.
(THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST.)
Jim, any age. Quiet, practical, and tired in a way that suggests a lifetime of responsibility. Jim
works at a funeral home and carries a familiarity with death that has shaped his worldview. A
man who loves deeply but expresses it through routine and presence rather than words.
This role will understudy Chris.
Davie, any age. Jim's coworker. Davie exists comfortably in the strange humor of funeral work.
Less emotionally burdened than Jim, Davie provides a pragmatic perspective on death and the
rituals surrounding it.
This role will understudy Toby.
Actors of any/all racial identity, gender identity, gender expression, or lived experience
are encouraged to audition and may be cast. These characters are defined by their humanity,
not by gender. We are excited by casting that brings lived truth, nuance, and specificity to the
roles. ALL ACTORS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT
