Inkwell Arts and Learning in collaboration with The Morton Arboretum is seeking actors 18+ for a walking play of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, directed by Emily Ann Brooks.

SEEKING:
Actors to play a variety of bold, playful characters. A walking play is a play outside where we walk to different locations to perform each scene. Artists in this show should thrive in an environment that encourages interaction and improv, within the cast and with the audience as well. Special skills such as playing an instrument are encouraged but not required.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Note: Shakespeare loves to play with gender! Some characters in this play are written in the gender binary with she/her or he/him pronouns - however we encourage all actors (including gender non-comforming, genderqueer, transgender, or non-binary performers) to submit for the roles that most excite them.

Hermia - Egeus's daughter. Both Demetrius and Lysander are in love with her. She is in love with Lysander and they run off into the forest together. Very strong-willed and independent.

Lysander - Young nobleman of Athens. In love with Hermia. Hermia's father is against her marrying him, he persuades Hermia to run away from home & family into the forest. He is passionate, loyal, and willing to fight for his love.

Helena - A good friend of Hermia's and is in dogged, unrequited love with Demetrius. She is really really struggling in her pursuit of Demetrius and follows him through the forest which puts her in some dangerous and humiliating situations.

Demetrius - A young nobleman of Athens who believes he is the rightful lover of Hermia. He is stubborn and strong-willed.

Theseus/Oberon - Theseus is the Duke of Athens who is about to marry the conquered Amazon Queen Hippolyta. Oberon is the King of the Fairies who rules with Titania. He is confident and not above a little scheming.

Hippolyta/Titania - Hippolyta is the legendary Queen of the Amazons engaged to marry Theseus. Titania is the Queen of the Fairies who rules with Oberon. She is kind, gentle, and strong in her convictions.

Philostrate/Puck - Philostrate is Theseus's Master of the Revels (party planner) who is responsible for organizing the entertainment for the Duke's marriage celebration. Puck is a mischievous fairy who delights in playing pranks on mortals;reports to Oberon. Has a connection not only to the fairy and human worlds of the play, but also to the world of the audience.

Nick Bottom - The overconfident weaver chosen to play Pyramus in the play that a group of Mechanicals have decided to put on for the wedding celebration.

Peter Quince/Egeus - Peter is a carpenter and the writer/director of the play. Egeus is An Athenian upper-class respected gentleman who wants his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius

Francis Flute/Peaseblossom - Francis Flute is the bellows-mender chosen to play Thisbe in the play. A member of the Mechanicals. Peaseblossom is one of Titania's fairies.

External Understudy/Walk Leader - These company members understudy one or two roles in the show, attend each show, and assist with audience interaction along the show route.

*all roles will be understudied

PAY:
$300 Stipend. Includes all rehearsals and shows. Shows canceled for weather/by the arboretum are still paid. All cast members have 2 paid sick days available. Internal understudies will be compensated for additional roles, based on how many roles they cover.

Time Commitment:

Rehearsals are on Saturdays and Sundays beginning May 16th at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle. We do our best to accommodate agreed upon rehearsal conflicts. Even if you have conflicts with the typical rehearsal times, we encourage you to submit and let us know about your time constraints, so we can see if accommodation is possible. Shows are Saturdays and Sundays, at 6 PM, from July 11th - August 16th, at The Morton Arboretum.

You will need to provide a video of a Shakespeare or heightened language monologue no longer than 2 minutes, headshot, resume, and any special skills that you think would enhance the world of the play.
