Gwydion Theatre Company is seeking actors for its upcoming production of Maxim Gorky's 'The Lower Depths'.

Where: The Greenhouse Theater Center (2257 N Lincoln Avenue)
Pay: $150 Stipend

Rehearsals: 1/12 - 1/29 @ Greenhouse Theater Center
Tech/Dress: 2/3 - 2/11 @ Chopin Theater
Performances: 2/12 - 3/1 Thursday Friday Saturday @ 7pm, Saturdays Matinees @ 2pm, Sunday Matinees @ 4pm

Please prepare a monologue not to exceed two minutes in length.

Character Breakdown:

Michail Ivanov Kostilyof - (Male, 40-60 years old, any ethnicity)- The landlord of the lodging, unhappily married to Vasilisa. Wildly jealous.

Vasilisa Karpovna - (Female, 30-50 years old, any ethnicity)- The lady of the house, Michail's wife. Having an open affair with Vaska Pepel. Routinely beats her sister, Natasha.

Natasha Karpovna - (Female, 20-40 years old, any ethnicity)- Vasilisa's sister, the object of Vaska Pepel's eye. Is beaten nearly to death.

Medvedev - (Male, 40-60 years old, any ethnicity) - Uncle to Vasilisa and Natasha. A corrupt cop who enjoys playing cards with the tenants of the house.

Vaska Pepel - (Male, 20-30 years old, any ethnicity) - A young thief, poor and angry at the world, yet brimming with intelligence and composure. He is in love with Natasha, but is having an open affair with Vasilisa. Vaska serves as Kostilyof's rival and de-facto leader to the tenants of the house. He is employed by Vasilisa to kill Kostilyof.

Andrei Mitrictch Kletsch - (Male 30-40 years old, any ethnicity) - A locksmith, yearning for his fortunate past, he chooses to neglect his dying wife, Anna, in favor of comfortable memories.

Anna Kletsch - (Female 20-30 years old, any ethnicity) - Andrei's wife, dying of a preventable illness. She is cared for by all members of the lodging except for her husband. Anna has given up on life and longs for a quick death.

Nastya - (Female 20-30 years old, any ethnicity) - A prostitute, she is childlike and reads pornographic novels. She is teased for hope and wonder for the world.

Kvashnya - (Male 30-50 years old, any ethnicity) - A vendor of meat pies, a card player. He has squandered away his formerly comfortable life but seemingly shows no regret.

Bubnov - (Male, 40-60 years old, any ethnicity) - A former tanner and haberdashery owner. He cannot figure out why he has fallen from grace, but remains in high spirits.

The Baron - (Male 20-30 years old, any ethnicity) - A former nobleman, he has lost his fortune and his title because of a severe drinking problem. He acts entitled towards other tenants, and often drinks with the actor.

Satine - (Male 20-30 years old, any ethnicity) - A scoundrel, he was badly beaten the night before for cheating at cards. Deeply introspective...or so he thinks.

The Actor - (Male 20-30 years old, any ethnicity) - A disgraced actor who once played the gravedigger in Hamlet, he is also a severe alcoholic and has a special connection to The Baron. He is lazy and often uses alcoholism as an excuse to avoid working.

Luka - (Male, 40-70 years old, any ethnicity) - A dreamer, he is new to the house and tries to instill hope in the tenants. He is older than the other tenants and carries life experience with him. His hopeful stories are rejected by the tenants for being fabricated and wishful.

Alyoshka - (Male, 20-50 years old) - A quick-talking and excitable boy raised in poverty. NOTE: This role will also take the lines of 'Zob' in the script.
