Denise describes her impromptu producing style, which welcomes everyone to step up to the mike and showcase the myriad of talents Chicago has to offer. Don't expect a drunken Karaoke night, however. While McGowan tries to accommodate everyone, professional and aspiring professional singers are especially encouraged to bring two choices of sheet music (in the proper key, no transposing, please). Depending on the crowd and on Denise's whims, most people are limited to one number, and no one knows (including Denise) exactly what order the evening will take on. With accompanist Becky Menzie at the digital grand piano, Denise enjoys mixing it up with a variety of song styles in random order. Up-tempo tunes are particularly appreciated, and even those having an off night needn't fear of "American Idol" standards. Everyone is promised a warm and encouraging reception.
The whole point of "Monday Night Live" at Petterino's is to showcase Chicago professional and aspiring talent in a supportive atmosphere. Denise says that some of the biggest crowd-pleasers come from the most unexpected places. So far, Petterino's has showcased over 85 singers, and while the crowd changes frequently there are also a number of regulars and familiar faces that frequent the establishment. Don't be surprised if a talent scout or two may be lurking around, either. And there is no cover charge, which should make it a popular spot with the abundantly talented but short of pocket creative community.
