The solution to the inherent problems of this old material lie in the staging of the small moments: the show works better when we can sit there and think to ourselves, yes, they solved that offensive line in this clever way. That said, plenty of folks clearly decided not to worry about most of the above ("Annie Get Your Gun" is hardly the only piece of American literature from the 1930s or 1940s with moments that make you cringe) and enjoy Todd's guileless charm and brassy pipes."
