"...Contey's moving "A View From the Bridge" also features a uniformly excellent ensemble including the laconic John Judd (as the narrating lawyer Alfieri), Mike Cherry as the hefty Italian immigrant Marco and Harrison Weger as Rodolpho, the vulnerable object of both Catherine's desire and Eddie's hatred. This is an intimate show with a focus on intense scene work."

"...When it’s directed wrong, Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge comes off as a dated melodrama about the unthinkability of incest. Fortunately, director Louis Contey at Shattered Globe understands it’s actually a piece about self-deception leading to self-destruction and thus is as much of a punch in the gut as it was when it premiered nearly 70 years ago. He presents the story of Eddie Carbone as Eddie destroys his relationships with his family—and ultimately betrays his principles and community—as one applicable to any family and any community at any time."

"...To me Arthur Miller may have been one of America's best playwrights. Yes, Tennessee Williams was also brilliant, but Miller was able to draw from more types of characters and in circumstances that were far different from one another. Of course, his "Death of a Salesman" and "All Our Sons" are perfect examples, but the rarely done "A View From The Bridge" is a very special story. Originally a one-act play staged back in the 1950's. After viewing the production on stage, he extended it into a two-act play which is the one that we are seeing today in Chicago."

"...The production has been expertly directed by the immensely experienced Louis Contey, who has gathered an outstanding cast. And the spare but ideal set by Shayna Patel focuses largely on the apartment in the Red Hook neighborhood near the shipyard where Eddie works, but also deftly suggests the nearby Brooklyn Bridge with a large coil of rope that stretches across one side of the stage."

"...Shattered Globe Theatre is known, and relied upon for, their consistently excellent productions. Their current presentation of "A View From the Bridge," one of Arthur Miller's finest, most gut-wrenching dramas, is as rewarding an evening in the theater as you're ever going to find."

"...Shattered Globe is one of Chicago's best and longest-running storefront theatres and it's easy to see why. Their briskly paced production of 'A View From the Bridge' is wonderfully acted, beautifully staged and very traditional. If you like classic American plays, this is the one to see."

"...Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge is a mid-century American story, a tale that’s rimmed with classic notions of honor and respect, as old as Greek tragedy and Sicilian immigrant lore. It’s a story of a man who loves too much and doesn’t understand why he’s mistaken in his love. This classic American play is being staged now by Shattered Globe Theatre in an intimate and brutally emotional production directed by Louis Contey."

"...Arthur Miller’s status as one of the canonical American dramatists has always left me a bit puzzled. His plays have obvious historical value, but his writing lacks the lyricism of Tennessee Williams, the social conscience of Clifford Odets, or the profound humanity of Thornton Wilder. Miller plays always struck me as more museum pieces than vital, living works. After seeing Shattered Globe Theatre’s production of A View From the Bridge, however, I’ve developed a new appreciation for the possibilities of his work onstage. In a muscular staging by director and ensemble member Louis Contey, the cast and creative team find new life in this classic by digging deep into it."

"...This 1955 masterwork, a visceral gut punch from start to finish, is brought to gritty life in part by this humble theatrical home where fewer than 100 people make for a packed house. A View From the Bridge goes with storefront theater like chocolate pairs with peanut butter, but this production would succeed on its own terms pretty much anywhere. That's undoubtedly aided by the fact that director Louis Contey also helmed a heralded Shattered Globe production of the show in 1993. Contey's passion for and familiarity with the play, which explores social themes that remain sadly relevant today, is evident in every beat."

"...Director Contey blends together these sharply distinctive voices and characterizations into an impressive contrapuntal unity, with all of the actors keenly attuned to each other's energy. We see this clearly at the end of Act One, in a scene that begins calmly and builds gradually toward a menacingly dissonant climax, as the major characters subtly disclose their divergent personal agendas and interpersonal feelings."
