35MM: A Musical Exhibition
Chicago Reader - Somewhat Recommended
"...Director Cameron Turner attempts to unify the material by staging almost every number as if it were the show's emotional climax, all scrunchy-faced exuberance or teary-eyed anguish. The five cast members have fine voices, and musical director Ryan Brewster's six-piece band delivers the goods. But incessant emoting turns middling lyrics into insupportable melodrama and by the time it's over, it all feels a bit silly."

"...Director Cameron Turner sends his cast careening around the small stage to great effect; he has a knack for high-octane, impressionistic choreography, evident early in the full-contact "Crazy Town." He also has directed his cast to create distinct alter-egos. This is a double-edged sword. We feel like we get to know the characters and wish them well...however, the sketchbook format makes for some awkward transitions and choices that feel wrong since we are trying to place them in a broader context. This is not a problem for most of the numbers, but it is disconcerting in pieces such as "Twisted Teeth," which may or may not be about vampires (sometimes the lyrics to Oliver's songs can be a bit obtuse), but comes across as a reflection on co-dependency-it is hard to tell whether "He is sucking me dry" should be taken literally or not."

"...From the first moments of this musical review, the mood was manic with movement and vocal expression. The opening number (Stop Time) was a whirling trip of lights and sound. It was VERY hard to hear anyone’s vocals. The band, although so great, was way too loud. I realized the balance was off. I chalked up this oversight to opening night energy, and hoping the balance gets fixed."
Chicago Theater Beat - Highly Recommended
"...Though it starts out a bit slowly and the sound quality leaves much to be desired, 35MM is well worth watching. A snapshot into our minds and hearts, with the angst, passion and need for connection, the show is distinctive and emotional. You’ll laugh, cry and long for love, while enjoying a cadre of striking voices and magnificent instrumentalists. Don’t miss out, and make sure to follow the journey of Circle Theatre so you can say you knew them when."
