Stage and Cinema - Highly Recommended

"...It's now become a holiday classic, Mary Zimmerman's gorgeous The Steadfast Tin Soldier at Lookingglass Theatre. It was glorious last year. It's lost no luster since. In only one fantasy-rich hour this superb illusionist, the toast of Lookingglass and Goodman theaters and the Metropolitan Opera, distills all the warm worth out of Hans Christian Andersen's tale. We're taken deep into the dreams and the doomed love of a one-legged toy soldier (Alex Stein) for a beautiful ballerina."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...There is no dialogue in this play, only acting in pantomime and wonderful music composed by Andre Pluess and Amanda Dehnert ( with a finale number they wrote with words by Ms Zimmerman, :Be Steadfast:. Mr. Pluess along with Christopher M. LaPorte also designed the sound and the lighting was designed by T.J. Gerkens."

NewCity Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...Directed by Mary Zimmerman, Lookingglass Theatre Company’s “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” is a beauty, sumptuous and intimate all at once. Told almost entirely through movement and marvelous interludes of puppetry, the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale about the love between a tin soldier and a paper ballerina comes to life in a brilliant variety of scenes that unfold over a single delightful hour."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...This magical family production, beautifully written and inventively directed by Mary Zimmerman, returns for another holiday season at Lookingglass Theatre. This theatre company never fails to enchant, mystify and, while impressing its audience with skill and talent, always manages to squeeze in a valuable lesson, or two. Lookingglass Theatre is acknowledged all over Chicago for providing audiences with some of the most memorable productions around. At just 60-minutes, the welcome return of this wonderful production is no exception. Ms. Zimmerman's stylish holiday fantasy was written with an attention to detail and directed by the playwright with jaw-dropping artistry, polish, flair and finesse. The entire cast, the pit musicians and the topnotch technical team who support this show are all first-rate. Collectively they offer Chicago families with a second chance to behold this must-see entertainment choice for the holidays."

Picture This Post - Highly Recommended

"...Zimmerman couldn’t pull it off without the amazingly talented actors in this show, by this writer’s lights. They put the physical in physical theater – and then some. No spoiler details here of their antics. Just know they mesmerize. Also know that they are not just schooled, but clearly have the equivalent of PhDs, in how to tell narratives in gestures. They transport us thoroughly to a world where fairy tales are real, nd the grey of our winter’s day is a distant memory."
