The Christmas Schooner

Bailiwick Chicago
6201 N. Hermitage Ave Chicago

The Christmas Schooner, the much-beloved musical will set sail into its 12th – and final - annual presentation at Chicago’s Bailiwick Repertory. This humorous, poignant musical was inspired by the historical story of the German and Swiss immigrants who sailed on ships like the Rouse Simmons, "The Christmas Tree Ship", which crossed Lake Michigan to Chicago to deliver fir Christmas trees for many years before it sank it an icy storm on November 22, 1912.

Chicago Tribune - Recommended

"...The show reconnects this city to a nautical heritage beyond the familiar world of wealthy bankers in weekend pleasure crafts. It reminds us that much of the North Side of Chicago -- where this theater sits -- was built by the sweat of German immigrants."

Chris Jones

Windy City Times - Somewhat Recommended

"...But largely, The Christmas Schooner offers pleasant tunes as well as a warm and fuzzy message about how certain objects like Christmas trees can evoke so many feelings of joy and nostalgia—even in sad or depressing times."

Scott C. Morgan

Chicago Free Press - Highly Recommended

"...Bailiwick’s twelfth and final showing of their annual “The Christmas Schooner” is one of the strongest versions of this Chicago holiday tradition that has been produced. There is humor, warmth and poignant determination at play here..."

Brian Kirst

ChicagoCritic - Highly Recommended

"...Bailiwick Repertory’s production highlights fine choral singing with melodious harmonies and moving tones. A.Scott Williams, as music director and accompanist, weaves through the score with fine piano work. The cast is delivers journeymen performances."
