Theatre News Wire

The Joseph Jefferson Awards announced its nominations for Non-Equity theater excellence. There are 28 categories in which 167 theater artists from 30 companies have been recognized for their outstanding performances in productions staged between July 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022. Out of 106 Non-Equity shows during this period, 49 were selected as Jeff Recommended and are therefore eligible for award nominations.

Four theatre organizations were recognized for the upcoming Non-Equity awards and have more than 10 nominations each. Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre achieved the most honors with 19 nominations from five plays. Kokandy Productions was next, receiving 16 nominations, while Blank Theatre Company and Invictus Theatre both had 14 and 13 respectively. Out of all productions, the one from Kokandy Productions, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" was nominated for 9 awards.

This past season, the Jeff Awards introduced a new Short Run Productions category (nine to 17 performances) and expanded their award categories. Among New Work, seven world premiere plays and one new musical are in consideration for awards. These categories include Best Production, Ensemble, Director, Performer - Principal Role, Performer - Supporting Role, Solo Performance, New Work, and Artistic Specialization.
