Myths and Hymns

Heartland Studio Theatre
7016 North Glenwood Chicago

A young couple, recently married and with very different outlooks on the world, must grapple with the sudden changes in their lives created by both a new pregnancy and a devastating death. The young man, like the heroes of Greek and Roman mythology, finds meaning in his accomplishments and individuality, while the young woman sees the world through the community of her Christian faith. Together, they must confront their own strengths and limitations in order to understand the universe into which they are introducing a new child.

"...The narrative created by the BoHo team, suggested through physical action rather than interstitial dialogue, doesn't always provide clarity. If you can let that go and surrender to the simple but evocative stagecraft (much of it involving the cunning use of two white curtains at the rear of the stage) and often gorgeous vocal arrangements under Nick Sula's musical direction, you may find this show one of the more satisfying musical evenings onstage now."

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...The main draw here is Guettel's exquisite, demanding score, drenched in the influence of modern jazz and the French impressionism of Debussy and Ravel along with touches of rock, gospel, and even an allusion to the score of the famous Slaughter on Tenth Avenue ballet by Guettel's grandfather, Broadway icon Richard Rodgers. The soaring, rapturous melodies and complex harmonies are beautifully, sometimes stunningly sung by Kevin Webb and Elizabeth Telford as the couple and Matt McNabb, Stephanie Souza, Sydney Charles, and Neil Stratman as their friends and family. The offstage band—Sula on keyboard and Nicholas Davio on percussion and guitar—is likewise superb."

"...Overall, I think this is a musical worth seeing for the amazing work that has been put into it. Even though I am not a huge fan of the musical itself the talent of the director, ensemble and scenic designer absolutely makes the 10 dollar ticket MORE than worth it. This type of work should be supported because it is risky and pushes these performers/technicians to be better."

Theatre By Numbers - Not Recommended

"...This is a song cycle by the composer of "The Light in the Piazza". The music is good stuff. The lyrics had problems. Mostly in that they often had very little to do with the construct that doubled as a plot. In truth there was no plot. A wildly inconsistent through line is there one minute, gone the next. It's almost impossible to tell what character any of the actors are trying to portray."

"...This is an art piece of the highest quality! Guettel's compositions are brilliant and BoHo's cast navigated the difficult music and lyrics expertly as the show was so polished you'd think that it was playing for months. This is a rare, and unique musical experience that begs to be seen."

"...I can’t recommend Myths and Hymns based on the story, but the amazing cast and music is reason enough to see this show, just don’t try to make sense of everything that happens and simply sit back and enjoy all the musical gifts on display."
