I Am Going To Die Alone And I Am Not Afraid Reviews

"...The final scene tells the story of Prague's Pinkas Synagogue; afflicted by floods for centuries, it now houses a memorial of 78,000 handwritten names of Czech victims of the Shoah. These names must be rewritten every few years as the waters wash them away. I can think of no better metaphor for the function of art-to remind us, as this play does, to keep the memory of the fallen fresh and remember the horror we're all capable of."

"...The 70-minute production begins with what appears to be a parody of some kind of underground Jewish vaudevillian variety show set in wartime Berlin. (There is even one actor playing a farcical version of der fuhrer.) The sketch is very funny and even silly. However, it becomes less funny when we see it again…and again…and realize that some of the players are no longer around to the part, undoubtedly victims of the Nazis. From the start, we are prepped for an evening full of different emotions, but there is never any question about where we are heading."

"...In a series of short pieces, the ensemble at Prop Thtr has woven a fabric of courage, pain and triumph. In the face of unimaginable pain, they've shone a light on the tendency to view human beings as a statistic and not as individuals. They've given us stories to hang on to when we're tired of screaming into the void. When it doesn't feel possible to push back against the evils of the world, we're reminded to just keep pushing. And screaming. Because we can never be truly alone in this if we stay among the chorus."
