Barney the Elf at Pride Arts Center - The Broadway

Barney the Elf

Pride Arts Center - The Broadway
4139 N. Broadway Chicago

After Santa Claus retires, his wicked son begins a not-so-jolly reign as the new head of Christmas. The North Pole begins to crumble under his bigoted rule, and Barney the Elf is forced to leave his home for being different from the others. Soon he embarks on a fabulous journey of self-discovery (or is it elf-discovery?) that lands him in one of Chicago's hottest drag bars. But can he truly leave Christmas behind for a new life in the big city? Barney the Elf brings musical numbers galore and plenty of queer holiday cheer to Chicago's Pride Arts Center.

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...Director Michael D. Graham's production is easily one of the most polished stagings I've seen at Pride Films and Plays, and even if a lot of the jokes land in that awkward middle ground between theater intended for young audiences and theater not at all for young audiences, there's a lot to warm up to."

"..."Holiday traditions" are not self-imposed titles. Now in its fourth year, Renaud and Schmidt's musical burlesque is still evolving from a raunchy romp offering affirmation to its flock to a parable providing instruction to pilgrims seeking deliverance from prejudice and intolerance. More experimentation is necessary, however, before its entrenchment in our cultural calendar is ensured."

"...All of the cast and crew of "Barney the Elf" as well as the staff of the Pride Arts Center have imbued this production with so much love and honesty and heart that you are guaranteed a Happy "Holigays!""

NewCity Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...For those who like a little sketch comedy-irreverence, replete with out-sized character, socio-political innuendo and blue lyrics slathered onto pop songs (and maybe just a little bit 'o tear-in-the-eye), the fourth annual production of "Barney The Elf" is the very thing. Bryan Renaud and Emily Schmidt's musical, inspired by the movie "Elf," played the Greenhouse Theater Center for the past three holiday seasons. Pride Films and Plays' new production is directed by Michael D. Graham, with several performers appearing in roles they have essayed in the past."

Chicago Theatre Review - Recommended

"...While this play with music may not appeal to everyone, theatergoers looking for something lighthearted, colorful and gay, with a holiday message of Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men, will certainly enjoy this show. Roy Samra and Dixie Lynn Cartwright are the strongest reasons for seeing this production and, while this is no Elf on the Shelf, the pixie-like, golden-toned Mr. Samra is likely to tickle everyone's fancy."
