Open Auditions for "Doubt, a Parable" by John Patrick Shanley will be held Sunday and Monday, September 29 and 30, at 7 pm each night. Callbacks if needed will be Tuesday, October 1.

In this brilliant and powerful drama, Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal, takes matters into her own hands when she suspects the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students. Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award.

Auditions will be at GreenMan's performance space, 232 S. York Rd., Elmhurst.

Matt Whalen directs the production.

Character descriptions Ages are the ages the actor can "read" onstage.

Sister Aloysius Beauvier: 50's/60's. Sister Aloysius is a nun and the stern principal of the parish school. Her behavior makes her feared by students and teachers alike. She was married before becoming a nun, so has seen the other side of life, and made the choice to enter this life. She sees the trickle-down effect of the corruption in the hierarchy of the Church, which shakes her entire being.

Father Brendan Flynn: 35-50: A middle aged priest. Working class from the Bronx. Articulate, Sociable, engaging, outgoing, personable, progressive, friendly, approachable. He argues that if each person were to be transparent about their own doubt, which is integral to their humanity, relationships would be strengthened by honesty.

Sister James 20-30: Sister James is a young nun and teacher at the parish school. At the beginning of the play, she has difficulty controlling her classroom, as the students understand her naivety and take advantage of her sweet personality. However, as she spends more time with Sister Aloysius, she transforms to be much more authoritative and terse.

Mrs. Muller 35-45: The mother of Donald, the school's first African American student. She tells Sister Aloysius that she is opposed to the possibility of Father Flynn's allegations being made public because she views the priest as a mentor and guardian for her son. She reveals that Donald is beaten by his father because of his effeminate behavior. This detail raises the specter that he may be homosexual and, by extension, hints that Donald may have been chosen for abuse because Father Flynn recognized his femininity. Mrs. Muller strongly opposes Sister Aloysius and reshapes the nun's idea of what it means to be a "good mother."
