Description:

Auditions for Theater Wit's upcoming production of TEENAGE DICK, by Mike Lew, directed by Brian Balcom.

ABOUT THE PLAY: In this brilliant retelling of Shakespeare's Richard III, one of the most famous disabled characters in history is reimagined as a 16-year-old outsider taking on the political turmoil of high school. Bullied for his cerebral palsy (and his sometimes disturbing tendency to speak with a Shakespearean affect), Richard plots his revenge...as well as his glorious path to the senior class presidency. But as he falls deeper into a pattern of manipulation and greed, Richard is faced with an unexpected choice: Is it better to be feared or loved? TEENAGE DICK is a hilarious and sharp-witted adaptation about perception, disability, and the treacherous road to ascendancy.

ROLES Richard Gloucester- male-identifying, any race, has a physical disability (written for cerebral palsy, but can be adjusted based on the actor). Age 18-35, to play high-schooler. Richard is the junior class secretary, slyly ambitious, and too smart for his own good. He just wants the world to be more fair to people like him.

Barbara "Buck" Buckingham - female-identifying, any race, has a physical disability (written as a wheelchair user, but can be adjusted based on the actor). Age 18-35, to play high-schooler. Buck is Richard's best friend, earnest, and has a good sense of humor about her disability.

Elizabeth York - female-identifying, any race; Age 30s-60s. Veteran English teacher. Trusting, caring, but a little naive - she's well meaning and wants the best for her students.

Eddie Ivy- white, male-identifying; Age 18-35 to play high-schooler. Jock. Quarterback. Junior class president, star of the football team, with limited tools but smart enough to know how to use them.

Clarissa Duke- female-identifying, any race; Age 18-35 to play high-schooler. Junior class vice president, Jesus-lover, and a cut-throat overachiever masked by a blindingly sunny personality.

Anne Margaret- female-identifying, any race; Age 18-35 to play high-schooler. Formerly the most popular girl in school with big plans and a big heart. An aspiring modern dancer who's just trying to get out of high school alive. MUST HAVE DANCE SKILLS.

Please note that we are seeking actors with disabilities for the roles of Richard and Buck; Please do not submit self-tapes these roles if you do not fit the character descriptions. Thank you!
