Staged Reading - I Never Saw Another Butterfly

Pay: $50 Stipend

Description:

Hampstead Stage Company is seeking 4 non-union actors (age 18+) for their Signature Series Staged Reading of a new, original adaptation of I Never Saw Another Butterfly by company member, Amanda Faye Martin.

This adaptation follows two children, Pepicek and Werner, in Theresienstadt, a concentration camp in German-occupied Czechoslovakia used for propaganda. Intertwining the poems and artwork created by the children in Theresienstadt, we hear their tale of heartache, determination, and discovery.

Character Breakdown:
PEPICEK - Jewish boy from Prague. Excitable, smart, and cares for others. Has been in the concentration camp for quite a while. May be played by any gender. Must believably play a teenager (15-17 years old).

WERNER - German-Jew. Slightly older than Pepicek. Was a member of the Hitler Youth before a recent discovery that his father had a Jewish grandmother. He has only been at the concentration camp a very short time. Played by a male identifying actor. Must believably play a teenager (15-17 years old).

OTHER CHILDREN/RED CROSS/NAZI GUARDS - played by 2 actors of any gender that can play both young children and adults.

Staged Reading - Sunday, September 30th, 2018 at 3pm at Stage 773 in The Cab (1225 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL)

Rehearsal - September 17-29 but will not rehearse every day during this time frame. Rehearsals will be held on weekday evenings and weekends. HSC is willing to work around actor's schedule. Rehearsal location TBA.

$50 stipend for the entire run. No housing provided, local hires only.

There will be a fully staged production that will tour nationally in Spring 2019. There may be opportunity for those cast in the staged reading to tour as well. This casting call is for the staged reading in Chicago only.
