Description:

Blank Theatre Company is seeking actors to submit for their inaugural production of Spring Awakening by Duncan Shiek and Steven Sater. The production will be directed by Blank's co-artistic director Danny Kapinos with music direction by Annabelle Revak and choreography by Britta Lynn Schlicht.

Auditions by appointment will be held Saturday April 21st from 12-5pm at Nox Arca Theatre (4001 N Ravenswood Ave, Suite #405, Chicago IL) and Monday April 23rd from 7-10pm at Compass Creative Dramatics (4001 N Ravenswood Ave, Suite #B3, Chicago IL). Callbacks will be held by appointment Saturday April 28th between 10am-7:30pm at the same locations.

The is an $80 stipend to be paid after strike and two comp tickets for the run.

This production will be staged in modern dress. Costumes will be pulled from the actor's personal wardrobes and curated by a costume coordinator. Actors are expected to help with strike and encouraged to participate in load-in. This production DOES contain sexual content and nudity. These scenes will be choreographed by an intimacy designer. This production DOES contain themes of mental illness, depression and death. This production DOES contain some violence which will be choreographed by a fight choreographer.

SEEKING:
The Teenagers (All will be played by actors 18+)
Melchior - (He/His/Him) A rebellious, socialist, atheist intellectual who feels trapped in a socially conservative world. Thinks that he knows how to solve all the problems of the world until he realizes the depth of his own capacity for violence. This role may require nudity.

Wendla - (She/Her/Hers) Heavily sheltered and deeply curious. When her mother refuses to answer her burning questions, she seeks out answers from Melchior. This role may require nudity.

Moritz - (He/His/Him) Eternally struggling for the approval of a father who never sees his son as good enough. He is tortured by academic struggles and confusing sexual dreams. Feeling that the whole world is working against him, he is driven to suicide.

Ilse - (She/Her/Hers) After facing constant physical and sexual abuse from her father, she has fled to an artists' colony where conditions are no better. A kind person who reaches out to others in pain

Martha - (She/Her/Hers) Private and emotionally closed off, she tries her best to keep the abuse she experiences at home a secret from her friends.

Hanschen - (He/His/Him) As intellectual and egotistical as Melchior, but with a sense of how the world works which allows him to live out his fantasies without consequences.

Ernst - (He/His/Him) Does his best to slip under the radar, but not as innocent as he seems to be at first.

Anna - (She/Her/Hers) A friend and classmate of Wendla's.

Thea - (She/Her/Hers) A friend and classmate of Wendla's.

Otto - (He/His/Him) A friend and classmate of Melchior's.

The Adults (Late 30s - 50s)
The Adult Male - One actor who plays a variety of adult men. Must be a versatile performer with a strong command of text. Minimal singing.

The Adult Female - One actor who plays a variety of adult women. Must be a versatile performer with a strong command of text. Minimal singing.

The role of Georg has been cast.

This production will utilize understudies. The roles of Wendla, Ilse, Melchior and Mortiz will be understudied internally. The other roles will be covered externally.

Actors of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, and abilities encouraged to submit.

Note: although the show presents characters who are traditionally white, cis-gendered, and able-bodied, we are excited to work with actors who do not necessarily identify with all of the above. If this applies to you, feel encouraged to let us know if there is a particular role you would like to be considered for when you submit to us.

All theatres that abide by The Chicago Theatre Standards make the following audition commitments to you:
-You will not be asked to audition more than 3 times for this production without compensation
-You will not be kept at any audition more than 3 hours, or past 11pm.
-You will not be asked to disrobe or perform any intimate contact or violence as a part of your audition.

Time Commitment:

Rehearsals begin on Sunday, August 5th and will be scheduled around actor availability. Rehearsals will run Sunday afternoons from 12-4pm and Monday-Thursday nights from 7-10 pm from August 5-30. Rehearsals will be held at Nox Arca Theatre.

Tech will be the week of September 2nd. There are 2 preview performances September 6th & 7th. The show then runs September 8th-30th. Performances will be Thursday-Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 3 pm. There is an industry night performance Monday, September 24th at 8pm. Performances will be held at Jackalope Theatre's the Frontier, 1106 W Thorndale Ave.

Material To Prepare:

For the "teen" roles, please prepare 32 bars of a rock/pop or contemporary musical theatre song. Please bring your book incase the production team wishes to hear more. For the "adult" roles, cold reading sides will be provided at audition.
