"...His lyrical prowess outweighs his vocal ability, and only a few sketches really land, but there's some profound insight here into the uniquely complicated relationship closeted gay Christians had with their sexuality during the height of the Catholic church's child sex abuse scandal."

"...Garrett has a strong sense of the things that made him who is today. He explores the racist, sexist and anti-LGBT messages he received along with the pro wrestlers that he lusted after to his eventual coming out. He also has no problem making fun of his ego as an actor and performer, which seems incredibly honest."

"...All in all, Altered Boy is a funny, real, slice-of-life peek into Garrett Allain’s life. This charming actor with great range is someone to definitely keep your eye out for in Chicago theater. Audiences of all orientations will identify with and appreciate his triumph in the eternal struggle of “adulting.”"

"...For all of the individual bits that do work well—”Gams” is a small masterpiece—there is just too much where the pacing is slow or the moment just doesn’t come together. One especially choppy bit has him interacting with a video version of himself: the timing is tricky, and he didn’t make it work on opening night. (Perhaps this will get better as the show moves on.)"
