Accidental Death of a Black Motorist at Athenaeum Theatre

Accidental Death of a Black Motorist

Athenaeum Theatre
2936 N. Southport Chicago

The Conspirators are back with another high-energy, high-style, hard-hitting satire, this time skewering the culture of police violence and the complicity of the Code of Silence. Updated and adapted from Dario Fo's modern classic, Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Accidental Death of a Black Motorist drops the story right smack in the middle of one of America's worst abuses of power. A crazy, maniacal actor infiltrates police headquarters posing as the State's Attorney and gets the bad cops to unwittingly confess the truth behind their victim's "accidental" death. As hilarious as it is provocative.

Chicago Reader - Somewhat Recommended

"...The thing about the Keystone Kops/Looney Tunes approach is that it benefits from brevity. At more than two hours (including a momentum-killing intermission), this play would benefit from some trimming. The very serious and ongoing issue of police brutality is a worthy subject and there's no doubt of this company's sincerity, but after being pummeled by a staccato attack made up of human ugliness, I longed for a reprieve."

Around The Town Chicago - Somewhat Recommended

"...If the goal for Sid Feldman and Mr. Bullion were to portrait the fine work of Chicago detectives as buffoons and that the administration is into cover-ups you missed the mark. I will admit every career field has it’s few bad apples, but this show gives no one a reprieve, the entire department is corrupt. And, maybe this is the wrong show for me to see, considering a good friends husband died earlier this year and was a detective for over 20 years, and just last month another co-workers husband was shot white doing his job."

NewCity Chicago - Recommended

"...“Accidental Death of a Black Motorist” may be too much of a good thing, but at heart it’s a very good thing: a high-voltage burst of memory and protest in a city that has always kept its dirty laundry well hidden. Acting, movement, sound, costumes, makeup, lighting and video come together here in a unique and mind-blowing experience for even the most blasé theatergoer. One of the play’s running gags involves the obscure word “raptus,” literally meaning “seizure” or “rapture,” which is invoked by the police as a magic formula to explain the motorist’s supposed accident or suicide. “Accidental Death” is a theatrical raptus, one that leads to awareness rather than despair."

"...The roots of this work are heady, drawn from Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo's absurdist Death of an Anarchist. Writer Sid Feldman, who has adapted it into a precise Chicago argot, justifiably claims script credits, having updated the original to a relentlessly witty, laugh-rich brew that will leave you breathless, and powerfully impacted. Picture This Post - Somewhat Recommended

"...It is, however, the opinion of this particular reviewer that a fundamental lack of subtext and a script that chose to proselytize, rather than reach for insight caused this compassionate, courageously subversive piece of theatre to fall short of reaching it's lofty potential. As such, this show is only recommended for progressive comedy fans who seek the catharsis of receiving their laughs from material with a clear social conscience."
