A Kind of Love Story at Oil Lamp Theater

A Kind of Love Story

Oil Lamp Theater
1723 Glenview Road Glenview

This hilarious and heartfelt play both skewers and pays homage to the romantic comedy genre. Mark is a nice guy who never gets the girl, while Ally can't seem to shake the world's worst boyfriend. Both have built their romantic ideals on Disney heroes, fairy tales and Cameron Crowe movies. They're perfect for each other, but there's just one problem: they've never met. As we follow their overlapping lives, we see all the ways these two are true soulmates, and wait for the moment they will find each other... if they find each other.

Around The Town Chicago - Somewhat Recommended

"...You cannot make a silk purse from a sow’s ear”. This is something I have heard for many a year. I must say that Keith Gerth and his cast of actors at The Oil Lamp Theater, truly gave it a shot, but, “A Kind of Love Story” Jenelle Riley’s little play that combines almost every romantic comedy ever, is just not the script that gets the job done. While she tries to capture the “When Harry Met Sally” meets “Sleepless in Seattle” meets “Family Man”, somewhere she turned against the grain. Gerth and company did the best they could with the material."

Chicago Theatre Review - Somewhat Recommended

"...What an apt name for a tale of modern day romance: A Kind of Love Story. The current generation has been lambasted for our non-committal views and our reluctance to label aspects of our lives. So, in turn, we are given a love story that is a saga of missed encounters and opportunities that have fallen through the net. Oil Lamp Theatre’s first show of the season, A Kind of Love Story by Jenelle Riley, is marketed as 500 days of Summer meets Sleepless in Seattle, but it would be more appropriate to purely market it as a conglomeration of Meg Ryan’s rom-com resume of Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and When Harry Met Sally."
