Black Sunday at TimeLine Theatre Company in Chicago

Embark on an unforgettable journey through time to experience a poignant tale intertwining climate upheaval, migration, and familial bonds, set against the backdrop of the impending disaster of one of America's most devastating dust storms. Directed by Helen Young, TimeLine Theatre presents the world premiere of "Black Sunday" by Dolores Díaz, offering a fresh perspective on the harrowing events of 1930s Texas.

Black Sunday symbolizes the culmination of a significant phase in TimeLine Theatre's evolution. Having spent 25 illustrious years at its location on 615 W. Wellington Avenue in Chicago's Lakeview East neighborhood, this production serves as the poignant farewell to that space, paving the way for an exhilarating new chapter in the company's journey.

TimeLine recently unveiled its exciting plans for the forthcoming 28th season, which includes collaborative ventures with three of Chicago's foremost performing arts institutions for the 2024-25 season. These partnerships serve as a stepping stone toward the eagerly anticipated inauguration of TimeLine's upcoming residence at 5035 N. Broadway Avenue in the vibrant Uptown district.

Black Sunday at TimeLine Theatre

It is April 1935 in the dust-riddled plains of Texas, and a family farm is struggling to keep afloat amidst a mounting series of ecological disasters. As Jesús, a farm worked with a secret, arrives in their midst, stubborn Pa refuses to believe his land is no longer viable, young Sunny dreams of a new life in bountiful California, and Ma has mysterious visions of the future. As everyone seeks respite from an increasingly uninhabitable environment, this powerful, atmospheric world premiere manifests a Dust Bowl beyond the familiar lore and viscerally confronts humanity's disregard for nature in the days leading up to the infamous storm known as Black Sunday.

Black Sunday is the fourth world premiere play developed through TimeLine Theatre's Playwrights Collective, the same new play program that brought forth TimeLine's debut productions of Tyla Abercrumbie's Relentless (Jeff Award, Outstanding New Work), Will Allan's Campaigns, Inc. and Brett Neveu's To Catch a Fish. The Collective was launched in 2013 to support Chicago-based playwrights in residence and create new work centered on TimeLine's mission.
