September 2020. Politics are at a boiling point, COVID is rampant and Zoom calls are still the absolute worst. When the Public Works Director of a major city confesses to a horrible crime, a team of spin doctors are brought in at the last possible second to pull off a tough assignment: prepare the Mayor's top aide for a crucial news interview, distance City Hall from the controversy and point the public's attention elsewhere. And do it all entirely over video-conferencing. At a time when live theatre is at a standstill, The Spin is a brand-new dark comedy written and produced entirely for the virtual medium.

Chicago Tribune - Recommended

"...If you buy a ticket to the world premiere from Chicago's Interrobang Theatre Project and follow the link, you'll find yourself falling deep down the Zoom rabbit hole. Spenser Davis, the writer and director of "The Spin," has recreated a vicarious Zoom experience so precise that I lost track of where my own laptop ended and the fake one inside began."

BroadwayWorld - Highly Recommended

"...At times uncomfortable and unsettling, with just the right balanced nuances of humor, THE SPIN is an inventive and creative look at how quickly we have adjusted to our new surroundings. Using multiple platforms, we not only eavesdrop on the prep session, but we also witness Pecarrero's interview while the team feeds her notes via an earpiece. It's a look at the political world played out with touches of humanity. This grounds it for those of us who wonder if this element even exists in that world."

Stage and Cinema - Highly Recommended

"...Satisfying, enriching, entertaining and proof that Chicago contains some of this country's greatest actors and theater, The Spin is writer/director Spenser Davis's brilliant blend of theatric sensibilities in a digital format. This offering from Interrobang Theatre Project in Chicago "opened" last night and it is hands down - along with The Civilians' Russian Troll Farm - my favorite online production since theaters began shuttering last March."

Chicago On Stage - Highly Recommended

"...Davis gets splendid performances from all of his actors, and his script allows them each to develop individual aesthetics and depth of character. He also allows them the leeway to play with the individual quirks that each of us has discovered on Zoom conferences. A throwaway bit where Ardebili shows off his expressive eyebrows as Clark watches himself on the monitor or another where he picks up his laptop to go to the bathroom feels completely familiar, as does April's desperation in setting up for the call in the furnace room of a building she doesn't even live in because she was nowhere near home when the meeting was called. Real life is always on display in these meetings, and Davis isn't shy about letting it hang out, nor does he shy away from the logistics of these COVID times. At one point he has Lorne tell Dierdre to calm down and "Door Dash yourself a cupcake.""

TotalTheater - Highly Recommended

"...You can play the naive observer and focus on the talking heads, of course, or bask in the premature nostalgia of events already receding into memory. Sharp-eyed spectators, however, would do well to watch what's happening in the chat window and/or the laptop screens of the other conference participants-one of whom is scolded by his horrified superiors for taking notes on PAPER and searching for addresses on a-gasp!-rolodex."
