The Real Life Adventures of Jimmy de las Rosas Reviews

"...Here are the ingredients for a Ricardo Gamboa production: A community, strong Latino, black and queer characters, and most importantly, supernatural abilities. Oh, and mutant Chihuahuas. You will find all of these in the Real Life Adventures of Jimmy De Las Rosas. The show is part of the Chicago Latino Theater Alliance ( CLATA's ) 2nd International Latino Theater Festival."

"...In Real Life Adventures, action-packed scenes straight from comic book panels (realized with the help of some imaginative fight choreography), are weaved with revelatory, based-in-reality, monologues about loss and community. Together they are able to bring power and agency to the community it [re]presents. After all, Jimmy’s superpowers might be instrumental in helping him defeat the villain, but, ultimately, it is the support he has from his community and the love and care that they all have for their neighborhood that keep them fighting. And there’s nothing fantastical about that."

"...I would label what Gamboa wrote an empowerment adventure. He tackles the most pressing issues of our time without being heavy handed while creating a space for youth of color to not only imagine themselves as something different but strive to be it as well. It's definitely a story that not only the youth of color in Chicago need, but the whole world. "Black Lightning" and "Black Panther" make room, "The Real-Life of Adventures of Jimmy de las Rosas is coming to town."
