Chicago Reader- Somewhat Recommended

"...At nearly two-and-a-half hours, many of the broad comedic choices in Bryan Wakefield's production rob the material of any bite—the decision to portray a language instructor (Nick Bryant) as a classic American charismatic preacher, for instance, limits the character to a one-note joke that barely sustains comedic energy in a three-minute sketch, let alone a two-act play. I did get a kick, though, out of Mary Mikva as a meek admin assistant who is far more concerned about lunch than the infighting of executive overlords."

"...Organic Theater has done such a wonderful job in The Memo, it is hard to imagine a more perfect presentation of this play by Czech writer and statesmen, Václav Havel. "

"...The Memo has many characteristics of farce, such as frequent quick exits and entrances, repeated phrases and actions, the hat shtick, and language turned into nonsense. Havel was probably influenced by the work of Ionesco, so we can rejoice in the fact that we can see three divinely absurdist plays in Chicago this month. Organic's The Memo, Red Orchid's The Killing Game by Ionesco and Trap Door's The Killer by Ionesco, which opens May 30."

"..."The Memo" is an interesting if not important piece of theater as it was written by Vaclav Havel who went on to become a player on the world stage in the role of reformer. Havel served as the last President of Czechoslovakia, then as the first President of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003."

"...The Memo is not for everyone. It is absurdist through and through, and I’ll admit that I was not sure what I felt about it until reflecting on it later. It’s also about twenty minutes too long. But the (unfortunately sparse) audience at the Greenhouse on Thursday night responded to what they were seeing with much laughter, and the actors appeared to be having a great time. If you are a fan of Havel (or Ionesco or any other the other absurdists), you’ll probably enjoy this one. And the conversation in the car going home, as you unravel it, will probably be half the fun."
