The Artificial Jungle at Stage 773

The Artificial Jungle

Stage 773
1225 W Belmont Ave Chicago

Things at The Artificial Jungle, the dilapidated pet store owned by mild-mannered Chester Nurdiger, are pretty routine. The devoted Mother Nurdiger does her best to give her son everything he needs, but there are some things a mother just can't provide. Chester's wife, the sultry and stifled Roxanne Nurdiger, is as restless as one of the hamsters in a cage, and when Zachary Slade, a mysterious drifter enters the picture, passions run wild. Roxanne and Zachary have the perfect plan to get rid of Chester and live the life Roxanne craves.

Chicago Tribune - Highly Recommended

"...Ridiculous Theatrical Company’s influence on Cerda and Hell in a Handbag gets a lovely irreverent homage here. And though “The Artificial Jungle” is not as outrageous or formally challenging as the best work of either company, Murray’s staging provides a steady and satisfying stream of laughs, anchored by performers whose surefooted knowledge of this style could take them through this “Jungle” blindfolded."

Chicago Reader - Recommended

"...Mostly it's a fun excuse for puppet designers Mark Blashford and Lanky Yankee Puppet Co. to go buck wild with lo-fi effects, filling the shop's tanks and terrariums with expressive—sometimes hostile—critters puppeteered by Corey Strode. An cast of familiar Hell in a Handbag faces delivers the usual—but still satisfying—physical comedy, door slams, and rake-effect bits.'

Windy City Times - Highly Recommended

"...For those unfamiliar with camp as a genre or with Hell In a Handbag's long and honorable mission to explore it in Chicago, The Artificial Jungle could possibly be the best introduction. Creating farce out of our darkest fears is a proud queer tradition—and possibly just what we need in times like these."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...Directed with bold brashness and great spunk and spirit by Shade Murray, this is one of Hell in a Handbag’s finest and funniest productions. With it’s grisly murder plot, the timing is perfect for a Halloween horror. Samantha Gribben’s colorful, compact, yet intricately detailed scenic design, coupled with an array of delightful pet shop creations executed by Mark Blashford/Lanky Yankee Puppet Co., all contribute to make this a showstopper. Add an appropriately cheesy original score and sound design by Brando Triantafillou and you have an over-the-top comic thriller that’s bound to provide both laughter and chills along Belmont Avenue."
