Chicago Tribune - Somewhat Recommended

"...It's a strong piece of writing, although it loses something in Milligan's busy performance, directed by Tom Oppenheim, which needs moments of restraint and stillness in order for the explosions to land that much harder. It's a matter of technique. Milligan is playing a man swimming through a jangle of emotions that are right at the surface, but he's doing too much here and the performance has no variation or narrative shape. It needs a quieter physicality."

Chicago Reader - Highly Recommended

"...Written and performed by Michael Milligan, this is a harrowing two-parter on how and why our country has failed to protect its "huddled masses" from sickness and destitution."

Stage and Cinema - Recommended

"...But, pitted together into this American Mercy Tour, the 145-minute evening piles on some very positive pain. There’s merit in its prognoses for a failing healing establishment where curing disease seems a sideline to profit incentives, assembly-line treatment, and bottom-line cost-cutting."

Picture This Post - Highly Recommended

"...Michael Milligan’s Mercy Killers and Side Effects are stories, side by side, of two men — one in the throes of profound grief following loss of a spouse, and another who is face to face with a make-it-or-break-it crisis in his medical career. Both stories are an indictment of the American healthcare system. Milligan shows us despair brought on by systemic dysfunction, bringing men to life stripped bare of the illusions of security and omnipotence."
