Short Shakespeare! The Comedy of Errors Reviews
Around The Town Chicago- Highly Recommended
"...How does one introduce their youngsters to "live theater"? In particular the works of William Shakespeare? Well folks, the answer is very easy. Bring them to Chicago Shakespeare Theater's "short Shakespeare" production of "The Comedy of Errors". First of all this is only 75 minutes of magic on stage. This is the David H.Bell adaptation and under the direction of Eli Newell on the stage at the new CST "the Yard" we are treated to a marvelous, highly energetic version of one of the greatest comedies "the Bard" brought us."

"...Beautifully, colorfully costumed by Ana Kuzmanic, with stylish wigs and makeups designed by Richard Jarvie, David H. Bell’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s broadest comedy is sheer madness and delight. Elie Newell has guided her cast with the skill of a circus ringmaster; there’s action happening everywhere, from all corners of the stage and out into the aisles of the theatre. Following each performance, which is a hit with middle and high school students, there’s an informative question-and-answer talkback with the entire cast. Not only is this production of “The Comedy of Errors” a perfect introduction to Shakespeare’s comedies for young theatergoers, but there’s ample opportunity to meet and talk with this company of gifted Thespians afterward."

"...So here it is in a nutshell. There is something about this absolutely farcically stupid and implausible, yet utterly brilliant and whimsically wonderful play for everyone to love. It's designed for families-the Chicago Shakespeare Theater describes it as "perfect for children ages ten and up"-so I brought my fourteen-year-old son to the 11 am Saturday morning Chicago opening. He's a happy kid and he loves to laugh, but still... about halfway through the performance, he looked at me and said, "This is the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life!" And, in truth, I don't disagree. "

"...The current production recreates the touring company aesthetic of the original with Newell and a superb cast telling Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identities. The wide-eyed physical gags and comic mayhem is framed by the earnest and engaging players who lead the way into the production with a clever and inspired preamble that is a real crowd-pleaser for young and old alike."
