Oxy, Ohio

Mckaw Theater
1439 W. Jarvis Chicago

Welcome to Dayton, Ohio, America's 2016 drug overdose capital. Mary works the night shift at an old folks' home; her drop-out daughter, Becky, works the night shift at Super 8; new acquaintance Tom has worked every conceivable job for his entire life; and they all work Dr. Wilmington, their favorite physician. But something isn't working. They are all caught up in the mass casualty opioid death march that now seems as permanent as Ohio's gray skies, crumbling concrete, lonely nights, and dead-end jobs. Welcome to the Midwest. Pick your poison.

"...The expendability of addicts' lives is an old story. But in S.J. Spencer's "Oxy, Ohio," set in Dayton, the back story of how they end up in such straits gets a clear-eyed but sympathetic telling - even if there is a bit too much telling and not enough showing in this Side Project world premiere."

"...It is very clear that Spencer is a talented writer, having created plausible situations and convincing characters, but his script tends to lose some of its steam by Act Two, which is unfortunate. What started out as a funny and honest critique of lost souls in middle America becomes sadly oversimplified by the conclusion. But some of that may also have quite a bit to do with the subject matter. What bolsters it is the strong ensemble of actors."

"...The monologue heavy format of OXY might not be to everyone’s taste as there is not much other action to draw our attention. But if words are your cup of tea, OXY, OHIO is a good fit for you. It’s also a good choice for someone who is ready for an impactful drama and can handle an emotionally heavy show. It might not be the best fit for those who might be triggered by drug use or domestic and sexual violence or looking for a lighter night out at the theatre."
