  Koalas at Berwyn Cultural Center

Berwyn Cultural Center
6420 16th Street Berwyn

The only thing more territorial than the escaped koala living and singing in Ray Slinger's backyard is Ray himself. Ray's protectionism goes into overdrive when his domain is unexpectedly invaded by his unemployed brother and gender-nonconforming child who insists on being called Nate. Stifled by rules gleaned from a rigid father and a rifle that needs constant attention, Ray plays the role of his own worst enemy in his quest to maintain visitation rights. How does a twentieth-century veteran survive the dawning of the twenty-first?

Chicago Reader - Somewhat Recommended

"...Michele Di Maso and Michael Holding also turn in exemplary performances as Ray's helpful neighbor and his Peter Pan-like sibling, respectively. But the story they find themselves in unfolds too slowly and gives the characters too little room to change and grow to keep the audience interested."

Picture This Post - Somewhat Recommended

"...Not a whole lot happens in the story until a very rushed climax, and despite ostensibly being the main character, Ray is rather passive and static. In that sense, perhaps watching his is like watching a zoo animal."
