In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play

The Edge Off-Broadway
1133 West Catalpa Avenue Chicago

1880s New York, The Gilded Age of America. The second Industrial Revolution has ignited a desire to change the fabric of daily life. When her physician husband creates a unique piece of machinery to massage the growing affliction of "female hysteria," Catherine Givings embarks on some new discoveries of her own. As Dr. Givings garners the attention of new patients, Catherine finds her own attention inexplicably drawn to what occurs "in the next room" and what it means for her. In this intimate and humorous journey of self-examination and sexuality, human connection is not only a climax, but a vital part of life itself.

Chicago Reader - Somewhat Recommended

"...But Ruhl takes the story in surprising directions that go against the grain of the surface narrative about sexual repression and desire. Opening night, the actors struggled at times to make those connections. Alesia has bright-eyed vivacity, but starts at a high pitch and doesn't leave herself a lot of room to grow emotionally as the story demands. However, Bester's Elizabeth—a Black woman mourning the loss of her own child while nursing an idle white woman's baby—brings in a steadying sobriety that grounds us in class-based reality. Overall, it's an amusing production that doesn't quite reach a satisfying climax."

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...When Sarah Ruhl's smart, intricately woven script about repressed sexuality during the 1880s meets up with the Idle Muse Theatre Company's brilliant acting, the result is unsurpassed. Bold, brash, and tastefully done, "In the Next Room (or the Vibrator Play)" is a refreshing, comical take on sex and intimacy in the Victorian Era. Set in New York, this cleverly inspired performance, directed by Morgan Manasa, is framed around the diagnosis of hysteria, which was then thought to be a mental disorder originating from some dysfunction of the womb."

Chicago Theatre Review - Highly Recommended

"...Sarah Ruhl’s humorous, yet sassy look at turn of the century manners and morals is not that far removed from today’s never-ending discussion regarding women’s rights. Despite its historical significance, this production, under Morgan Manasa’s tight direction, is filled with fun, good vibrations, and is both insightful and fresh. The playwright shows how society and, in particular, men still need to recognize the needs and potential of the women around them, even in the 21st century. Idle Muse presents an adult comedy that’s fun, unabashedly sexy, historically accurate and very relevant today."

The Fourth Walsh - Recommended

"...Idle’s IN THE NEXT ROOM (OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY) is definitely interesting and sometimes funny. The spotty humor feels more buffoonery than Ruhl’s intended clever witticisms."
