I and You

Oak Park Festival Theatre
157 Forest Avenue Oak Park

One afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline's door, bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, an urgent assignment from their English teacher. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn't been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As these two let down their guard and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks a much deeper mystery that has brought them together. I and You is an ode to youth, life, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness.

"...This coproduction between Oak Park Festival Theatre and Open Door Theater isn't perfect. At 90 minutes without an intermission, the play feels a little long, though it is hard to tell if the problem is in the script—which could be trimmed—or in the performances, which still felt a little rough on opening night. The pace flags about 50 minutes in, but then picks up again. In the end, though, Gunderson, Wakefield, Bittner, Robinson, et al., win us over, sending us out into the night with these lines from Whitman echoing in our heads: "For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.""
