Hitler's Tasters

North Shore Center for the Performing Arts
9501 Skokie Blvd Skokie

Three times a day, every day, a group of young women had the opportunity to die for their country. They were Adolph Hitler's food tasters. Based on true historical events, Hitler's Tasters is a dark comedy about the young women who were forced to be Adolph Hitler's food tasters. And what do girls discuss as they wait to see if they will live through another meal? Like all girls throughout time, they gossip and dream, they question and dance - they want to love, laugh and, above all, they want to survive. Hitler's Tasters won the 2017 Women Playwrights Series Susan Glaspell Award. This culminated in the world premiere in 2018 and paved the way for the New York premiere in October 2018, where it received wide critical acclaim. The next production with the original New York cast will be at the North Shore Center in Skokie in advance of performances at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Around The Town Chicago - Highly Recommended

"...First of all, when you see the title of this play, do not “judge the book by its cover” truly is the expression to use. This is a unique piece that is being presented by the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie as part of a special “Summer Theater” program. Written by Michelle Kholos Brooks, this 90 minute drama challenges the audience to fall in love with its characters despite their being a part of Nazi Germany. It all takes place in a large dining area where there are three girls, who have the task to taste the meals that their leader and commander is to be served."

"...The second in the lineup for North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie’s Feature Series Summer 2019 Season, “Hitler’s Tasters” runs from July 5th to July 14th. Written by Michelle Kholos Brooks, the show is a dark comedy inspired by true stories and directed by Sarah Norris. Four women take the stage as they are tasked with the stressful order of tasting Adolf Hitler’s food before he consumes it himself to make sure that it is safe and unpoisoned. After completing its run in Chicago, this production will travel to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. This incisive look at how young women aren’t treated well in any age or country only runs for two weekends, so get your tickets NOW."

Sophie Vitello - Highly Recommended

"...Hitler's Tasters is a strong work, and Brooks and the creative team even adapt the music to different venues in which it plays - in an effort to engage audiences. With the all-women cast and creative team, Brooks says the music is also drawn from women performers - Ow Ow Ow by Spud Cannon; The Navigator by Hurray for the Riff Raff and Child of the Sun by Amyra among them. Perhaps this show could be tightened by 5 or 10 minutes - there are moments when the pace lags - but it's a minor concern."
