Bad Girls: The Stylists

Strawdog Theatre
1802 W. Berenice Chicago

In this black comedy, five women play 28 characters as they work through the absurdities and trials of trying to be a "good girl" in modern society: a professional success, a perfect mother, the right kind of feminist. BAD GIRLS: THE STYLISTS follows four hairstylists in a salon, trying to grow their business in a competitive field. In a series of hilarious and tragic scenes, the stylists lend their ears and their scissors to a parade of customers. They make up their hair, their faces, and give shape to the stories about who they are. But with the arrival of a mysterious stranger, life in the salon starts to get complicated - and dangerous. As the women's stories begin to unravel, the play examines what we owe to ourselves and each other, the difficulty of forming true connections, and all the ways in which we fail.

"...Studying our concept of femininity seems to be the goal throughout the entire one-act, which sets the superficiality of a salon against larger life-cycle issues like weddings, children, and sexual dysfunction (heads-up on some explicit scenes and language here). With minimal plot and elements magical realism, this a tough one to digest for those used to linear storytelling."

"...Taking place in a beauty salon, the story follows four hair stylists through their daily endeavors in the workplace, getting all the more interesting as one client is more unique as the next. A series of outrageous scenes take place, the play offering plenty of laughs, as the banter between the stylists is quite funny at times along with some highly engaging interactions with their walk-ins."

"...There are fine plays set in hair salons. Steel Magnolias comes to mind immediately. And it is certainly possible to write an excellent salon show that combines that iconic location with absurdity and meta-theatre. But, I ashear you, Akvavit Theatre's Bad Girls: The Stylists is not that play. I didn't need to mullet over to know that this play, which does feature a fine cast of enthusiastic young performers who give their all, is a pretty hairy experience."
