The Underground

Pay: Yes

Description:

The Underground is a two-part play about a group of musicians who desperately attempt to revive their dying artform in spite of resistance from government agents.

This project is a self-produced staged reading with two performances. The first, will be a private reading for feedback, and the second will be to introduce the show to the public.

Standard working rate on this show will be $25/hr (rehearsal time and time spent out of rehearsal). Hours accrued weekly and paid out for the previous week on Fridays.

Roles to be cast:

Hayden: Mid 20s. Singing role, baritone. BIPOC role. Hayden is a government agent assigned to his first mission which involves infiltrating a group of entrepreneurial-minded musicians. As this first assignment progresses, he appears to grow fond of music... Or is he just good at his job? Looking for a cerebral actor who can walk a fine line that makes the audience desperately want to know what he's thinking, what he's planning, etc, without ever getting the satisfaction of confirmation

Lavina: Mid/late 20s. Non-singing role. Successful early career politician with ambiguous power and hundreds of secret agents. Lavina comes up against a small group of musicians as she meticulously and systemically attempts to eliminate the artform. While she is unlikeable, she holds attention incredibly well. Looking for an actor who can not only play commanding and forceful, but can do it at a wide range. Verona: Late Teens/ Early 20s. Singing Role, mezzo. BIPOC role. Verona is a friend of Ty's from school. She denies his initial invite to join the new music school, but joins later, once it has turned into a performance art group. Looking for an actor who can slowly develop a character over the length of the show

Lyra: Mid 20s. Light singing. One of 3 hosts for 'The Word Smiths', a radio show that is constantly being censored by the government. Lyra is the history and policy buff of the group, and loves engaging in conversations about artistic ideas. Very quick-witted, and rarely caught out of step. Looking for an actor who can keep the energy up, and keep the ideas flowing.

Davis: Mid 20s. Light singing. Davis functions as the main host of 'The Word Smiths'. He is definitely a focused person, and likes to keep things moving and on track. He is generally charismatic and skilled at making conversation. Very curious about music and this group of musicians that their radio group starts collaborating with. Looking for an actor with strong command of their voice.

Richie: Mid 20s. Light singing. BIPOC role. Richie is definitely the aloof, more quiet host of 'The Word Smiths'. He doesn't usually talk unless he's particularly engaged or has something to say that nobody else wants to say. Looking for an actor familiar with poetry and spoken word.

Time Commitment:

1-2 rehearsals per week during the month of October. Rehearsals will be located at the director's apartment in Lakeview. The performances will be on the evenings of 11/6 and 11/20
