Glass Apple Theatre
Lighthouses in the Desert

Pay: Yes

Description:

Glass Apple Theatre is holding auditions for Lighthouses in the Desert. Written by Richard James Zieman. Directed by Cheryl Snodgrass

Description:
Gail is convinced that the explosive story she has pieced together through news clippings and eyewitness tales will make her neighbor Toni an overnight millionaire if she publishes the story, rescuing Toni from her life as a sex worker. But all is not as it seems, and the imminent destruction of their squalid apartment building means the elderly Gail is quickly running out of time before everything in her life is demolished beyond repair.

Characters:
GAIL: female presenting, 70 years old. Energetic, eccentric, curious, a shut-in. A cross between Amanda Wingfield and a kindly bag lady, Gail's life has been phenomenally underwhelming, never living up to the dreams she once had for herself as a young girl.

THE GIRL: female presenting, early 20s. Gail's Inner Critic, her imaginary tormentor and confessor. The Girl is Gail's illusory version of the young lady she always wishes she had been: blunt, confident, independent, and razor-sharp.

TONI: female presenting, early 20s. Sold by her father into two different, disastrous marriages as a teenager, Toni is no nonsense. Almost against her will she has taken a maternal attitude towards Gail, whose eccentricities drive Toni to occasional bursts of anger. She has no illusions about herself and her life as a sex worker but worries greatly about what will happen to her elderly neighbor once their apartment building is demolished. Her kindness toward Gail is as confounding as it is compulsive.

The characters are all on the binary (she/her/hers), but we encourage cis-gender, gender-nonconforming, transgender, and non-binary performers of all ethnicities to audition for the role that most suits their type and voice.
