The Bone Harp: Winter Workshop

Pay: Stipend

Description:

The Bone Harp tells the tale of two sisters, who are left to pick up the pieces after their mother disappears. Jenny and Jessa are outsiders, living on the outskirts of town with their father, the village gravedigger. Since their mother ran away two years ago, they've found companionship in the Boneyard, a ghostly realm they can only enter together, populated with the spirits of the town's former inhabitants. When a new spirit appears in the Boneyard, the girls must question everything they thought they knew about their family, and decide which world they want to live (or die) in.

Book and Lyrics by Laura Stratford, Music and Additional Lyrics by Heidi Joosten

Characters:
Jessa Allen (F, 18, Soprano): Resembles her mother.

John Allen - Father (M, 40-60, Bass): The charnel-house and graveyard keeper of the town. Careworn and hard-worked. Cares deeply about his work and his family.

Jane Allen - Mother (F, late 20s, Mezzo): Resembles her eldest daughter, Jessa. Warm and charismatic but somewhat impetuous. Has been missing for ten years.

Mr. Laird (M, 40s-60s, bass-baritone): A ghost; a music teacher when he was alive. Proud of those he teaches; wants his legacy to live on. The people he loves can do no wrong.

Ms. Blake (F, 30s-40s, soprano): A ghost; an herbalist who listens to the greater happenings in nature as much as any human conversation.

Mrs. Flood (F, 50s-70s, alto): A ghost; the village storyteller when she was alive. Enjoys being in control, and is secretly terrified of passing on.

Mr. Rafferty (M, 30s-60s, tenor): A ghost; pretentious and affected, but in a harmless, foppish way. A former shopkeeper who loves beauty, pageantry, and drama.

The role of Jenny Allen has already been cast.
