THE DUCHESS OF MALFI - Female identifying, over 30. A widow who has gained additional status and wealth from her deceased husband. She is not afraid to make her own choices through love and life despite what is customary. Bold and independent, though perhaps slightly naive about how ugly the world can actually be.
BOSOLA - Open gender, open age; A former prisoner overseas, upon their liberation, they are hired to spy on the Duchess and take care of her brother's dirty work, until Bosolo is pushed beyond even their flexible morality.
FERDINAND (the duchess' twin brother) - Male identifying; Over 30. Corrupt and arrogant, takes pride in his position within the aristocracy, obsessed with his sister her money and her perceived purity.
CARDINAL (older brother of Duchess and Ferdinand) - Male identifying; Mid 30s/40s (older than Duchess/Ferdinand). Manipulative and seemingly devoid of emotion and morality. Dangerous.
ANTONIO BOLOGNA (steward of the Duchess' household and the duchess' eventual spouse) - Female, trans fem, GNC or non-binary; mid 20s/30s. Honest, hard working and respected within their socio-economic status.
DELIO - Open gender; mid 20s/30s. Antonio's best friend and loyal confidant. Also Julia's ex.
JULIA - Female identifying; mid to late 20s. Married, but also the mistress of the Cardinal; unafraid of her sexuality, working class (Actor must be comfortable also playing the male-identifying character of the Doctor)
